This is because Assyrians have experienced continued persecution and intimidation by the successive dictators and brutal regimes that have ruled the occupied Assyrian lands till this day. The genocide of the western Assyrians took the form of provincially organized campaigns initiated behind the scenes of the Armenian deportations, and without the full knowledge of the central government. In order to keep the campaign secret the Assyrians would normally be massacred outright rather than being marched away like the Armenians. Thousands of Assyrian refugees entered into Syrian Al-Jazira, from Turkey following the Assyrian Genocide of World War I. Additionally, in 1933 a further 24,000 Assyrian Christians fled into the area, following the Simele Massacre in the Mosul region of northern Iraq.

A decade and a half later, in August of 1933, several thousand Assyrians were massacred by Arabs and Kurds in Iraq, before the eyes of the British. The events later known as the Simele Massacres were described by Assyrian historian E. Shimun: Girls were raped and made to march naked before Iraqi commanders. Children were run over by military cars. The article appeared in the online edition of the French newspaper Le Figaro, reminding of the less-known massacre of Simmele in the year 1933 in Iraq. According to various sources, as many as 6,000 innocent Assyrians were killed, and tens of thousands displaced. Post WW2, Lemkin’s conclusions would evolve into the concept of “Genocide” as the world discovered the tragic truth about the Jewish Holocaust. But although the Simele massacre was the “inspiration” for the international laws against genocide, the international community has persistently failed to acknowledge the Assyrian genocide.

Historians disagree as to who was responsible for ordering the mass killings. Stafford blames Arab nationalists, most prominently Rashid Ali al-Gaylani and Bakr Sidqi. Efforts to have the Assyrian genocide formally recognized began in the 1990s and have been spearheaded by the Assyrian diaspora.
